Although Rwanda served as the beginning, Uganda was the surprising chapter that expanded my story. It started naturally, as a friendship grows slowly until you finally see it. I didn’t want to fall in love with another country. It forms who you are today. Uganda greeted me with a warm welcome. Its lively streets, vibrant energy, music that filtered throughout daily life, and people who emanated happiness in their laughter gave me a fresh awareness of life.
Uganda taught me resilience via community. There was an unspoken power in the way people supported one another, even if life wasn’t always easy. Here is where I started to adapt and thrive in environments both familiar and strange. I found pieces of myself by making fresh friends and understanding the pace of a location that was not my birthplace, but now I call home.
Being between Rwanda and Uganda changed me in ways I couldn’t understand then. My sense of belonging grew as it was no longer confined to one location but somewhat entwined across civilizations, people, and places. It let me reside in two houses concurrently without sacrificing either one.
Growing up in Uganda, I got more conscious and curious. I began to see the world as open and fluid rather than as stationary. I developed in my own home, which was now in more than one place, and found my heart. That understanding would be essential for the journey ahead since I would soon be called upon to forsake all familiar and start over in a distant country.
