Looking back on my journey, I’ve realized that all I’ve been through — the bravery, the relocation, the reconstruction — wasn’t simply for my own benefit. I sowed the seeds for those who would follow me with every stride I took. What we cultivate while we are still here is just as important as what we leave behind after we are gone.
Being the one who breaks barriers, the one who enters uncharted territory so that others may see what is possible, is a silent sort of power. I often think of the young women who could one day read my tale, those who are at the crossroads between their comfort zone and their calling. I want them to understand that it’s acceptable to be scared, but it’s never acceptable to let fear influence your decisions.
For me, legacy is about storytelling, preserving the memories of the hills of Rwanda, the joy of Uganda, and the aspirations I brought with me over the seas. You may teach others that identity is fluid yet solid, and that belonging is something you can establish, even when you are far from home, by mentoring them. It’s about instilling in the next generation a sense of pride in their history as they take a brave step into the future.
Thinking about the woman I am today, I see not only my own reflection but also the echoes of all the people, cultures, and experiences that have influenced me. My tale is a stunning, imperfect, and colorful mosaic, with each piece reflecting a story of fortitude.
The seeds I’m planting right now are for the people who will walk the paths I can only imagine. I have lived my life well if my tale contributes to their conviction that courage can blossom even in unfamiliar surroundings.
